Zimmer and McKee Autograph New Book

Jim McKee and Ed Zimmer describe the process of coauthoring their latest book, Lincoln.

A near-full-capacity crowd gathered on May 14, 2022, at Francie & Finch Bookshop in downtown Lincoln to hear Ed Zimmer and Jim McKee describe the process of coauthoring their latest book, Lincoln, which is part of the “Postcard History Series” of Arcadia Publishing. Ed and Jim wrapped up the event by autographing books purchased by attendees. The book is now available at Lincoln booksellers.

The paperbound book contains 211 black-and-white reproductions of postcards that depict historic buildings, places, and events in Lincoln. Most of the postcards reproduced in the book are from the first quarter of the 20th century, when postcards emerged as a popular way for people to connect with others by sending an interesting image and a written thought or two via the U.S. Postal Service. McKee and Zimmer selected the postcards from their own extensive collections and wrote informative captions for all of the cards in the book.

Ed Zimmer, recently retired, is an architectural historian who served for 35 years as historic preservation planner in the Lincoln/Lancaster County Planning Department. Jim McKee is widely recognized as Lincoln’s city historian. He is an independent bookseller and publisher who writes a weekly Sunday newspaper column in the Lincoln Journal Star on historic buildings, places, and people who have shaped history in Lincoln and elsewhere in Nebraska.

Both Ed and Jim have presented numerous Brown Bag Lectures for the Preservation Association of Lincoln. Video recordings of the Lectures are archived on the PAL website (www.preservelincoln.org) and on YouTube.

Ed and Jim have dedicated their book to “. . . our ‘PALs’ at the Preservation Association of Lincoln who share history to build community.” Jim and Ed are generously donating all royalties from their book sales to PAL, a gesture for which the organization is most grateful.
