Eileen E. Bergt Receives Heritage Hero Award

The Board of Directors of the Preservation Association of Lincoln is pleased to announce that Eileen E. Bergt, immediate past president of PAL, has received a “Heritage Hero Award” from the History Nebraska Board of Trustees. The award was presented to Eileen by Sean Flowerday, a member of the History Nebraska Board of Trustees, at PAL’s annual meeting on June 26 th , 2022, at the recently-rehabilitated historic Sky Park Apartments at 1301 Lincoln Mall. Eileen was presented a certificate and a “Heritage Hero” pin.

Capitol Tour Highlights Courtyards and HVAC Projects

On a rainy May 24, 2022, a tour group of about two dozen interested preservation advocates participated in the Preservation Association of Lincoln’s informative and inspiring “Capitol Heating & Cooling Upgrades & Courtyard Tour.” These current projects in the Nebraska State Capitol have been planned and are being carefully implemented to protect and preserve the architectural integrity of Nebraska’s iconic Capitol, which has been listed as a National Historic Landmark since 1976.

Zimmer and McKee Autograph New Book

A near-full-capacity crowd gathered on May 14, 2022, at Francie & Finch Bookshop in downtown Lincoln to hear Ed Zimmer and Jim McKee describe the process of coauthoring their latest book, Lincoln, which is part of the “Postcard History Series” of Arcadia Publishing. Ed and Jim wrapped up the event by autographing books purchased by attendees. The book is now available at Lincoln booksellers.

The Nebraska Historic Tax Credit Will Die

Efforts to extend the Nebraska Historic Tax Credit have likely been futile. According to state legislation, the program will sunset on December 31, 2022. In an attempt to strengthen the program and extend its life, several bills were introduced to the legislature during the 2021 and 2022 sessions. As of Friday, April 7th, none of the bills were listed on the agenda for a floor vote.

Revealing Lincoln’s Postcard History

Historians Jim McKee and Ed Zimmer, both highly respected experts on the history of Lincoln, have each dipped into their vast collections of Lincoln postcards to assemble a jointly-authored book of 211 scanned postcard images and accompanying explanatory narratives. The selected postcards, all considered rare today, date from the early 1900s through the 1930s.
